Tips for staying sane during cyclones

  • Obtain a copy of the area's contingency plan if one is available. Study it and familiarise yourself with the creeks.
  • Be prepared by having plenty of food and water although it is bound to rain bucket-loads.
  • Keep decks and helm clear.
  • Keep a spare anchor ready - tied to something secure.
  • Have plenty of long lines available and make sure they're in good condition.
  • Listen to the radio (commercial & VHF) and follow the instructions of the Port Authority or whoever is in charge of the evacuation.
  • Don't panic.
  • If you see someone in difficulty offer to help if you can.
  • If you have a problem and need help - ask for it.
  • Once in the creek, tie in securely but leave the web lines until the creek is full. Don't obstruct other boats from entering and passing you.
  • Help other boats as they arrive.
  • Make sure your sails and awnings are either removed or lashed securely.
  • Double and triple check your lines.
  • Once everything is done that can be done, sit back, visit other boats, invite other yachties to your boat, relax and socialise. Take your mind off the situation. There's nothing more that you can do.
